I'll try to be honest. I was expecting something different out of this book. Something cynical and, even more, skeptical. I hoped it will be rational and so realistic that it annoys you if you are in a relationship. Something that makes you doubt everything you thought you ever knew. That would be my kind of literature - provocative, ugly and real. What did I get instead? Fortunately - only one wasted day while reading it.

Fortunately - only one wasted day while reading it. One day where I had to listen to whining and crying of a man, who doesn't know which toy to choose. Man who thought that his typical relationships are so interesting and different that we all must read about it. Well we don't.The ending annoyed me the most.

If you start a book like that, it's not fair that you turn into Nicholas Sparks or Rosamunde Pilcher at the end of it. Saying that love lasts more that 3 years because it is so beautiful to hold someones hand forever etc. Is basically admitting that this whole book was bullshit, because it really was.Have a happy life, Beigbeder.

And please don't write anymore. God,(who doesn't exist)who gave a pen to that French poseur? OK.I got it.Not everyone can write, but at least be reasonable enough not to publish it.I make a comment on L'amour dure trois ans in particular as it is Beigbeder's most popular book but my opinion stays the same for the rest of his 'chefs-d'oeuvre'.Beigbeder didn't say anything new, neither true. Throughout the whole book I was feeling as if I was reading some weird dark version of Coelho. That speaks for itself. And what's the God,(who doesn't exist)who gave a pen to that French poseur?

That speaks for itself. And what's the matter with the so-called 'cynicism' in this book? Playing the bad connoisseur, being french and horny doesn't turn your shitty thoughts into a masterpiece. I'm sorry he's just not the next Bukowski. But amid all that drollery in his book, the reader may labour to summon up much symphathy for the precious, nerdy poseur called himself a writer.Juste non. My intention is far from trying to comment the plot line of 'Love lasts three years'. After all, what makes a novel worthwhile in the first place is not the story itself, but the substance of it and the insight it brings - something this book surely misses.

Begbeider is admittedly an enthusiastic wannabe writer, who gives a misleading notion from the very start. Being so caught up in his big ego and hype adopted concepts, he is completely inept in transmitting his personal message to the reader. Begbeider is admittedly an enthusiastic wannabe writer, who gives a misleading notion from the very start. Being so caught up in his big ego and hype adopted concepts, he is completely inept in transmitting his personal message to the reader. What he ends up with is a soon-to-be-forgotten book, full of common overused cliches, inconsistencies and contradictions, which could easily fit into the tight columns of Cosmopolitan magazine. In the last two, three years it was difficult to avoid Beigbeder. He and his French companion Houellebecq were the IT item. French literature that you couldn't avoid. In many social circles, their books were discussed, and it was a big entrance for these two ironic, hypocritical and coquette men who were making fun of the same social subcultures. Many adjectives described them: fakers, amateurs, unskilful writers, writing about life nonsense and wastefulness while having everything.

According to critiques everything is: enough money, cocaine, sex and self-pity.Frederic Beigbeder is an enfant terrible of French literature. Many ho-ho so posh critics would say that because he is not born handsome (but born rich), he has decided to become a writer – to put all his psycho-soul pain on paper and to sell it to the ones who still want to feel like they are something, while they are actually nothing.Bullshit is when you read this stuff from a professional critic pen. I like Beigbeder style, not a lot, but enough. His character, Marc Marronnier, is a man who is wasting his time screwing women, sniffing cocaine, organizing trendy parties and fooling himself that love lasts 3 years. He is a f.cking moron who divorced his beautiful wife, cheated her with sexy Alice and completely neglected anything good in his life:1. Happiness doesn’t exist2.

Love is impossible3. Nothing is terribleThat is his mantra, or how he puts: recipe for lifting moral.Although, easily said, he is a lowlife of today’s modern world, being too cynical, desperate and self-destructing, he thinks of himself as intellectually superior. And he’s OK in a small dose. Marc Marronnier is a prick without a doubt - and Beigbeder surely is one as well, but he writes excellently. At least he wants us to believe this.So enfant terrible or not, love him or judge him – Beigbeder or Maronnier found what they have been looking for.All heard before, but what I love about this book is interpretation of this self-absorbed bastard, who in the end is not that at all. He does seem a bit pathetic and sad, just, in the end, end, normal, like most of us, under hormones and acceptance of life steadiness and calmness.

Under paws of something that only love brings, even to those that neglected it with a hard-core negative philosophy.Great read with a pinch of salt. Well, not a pinch – with a truck full of contemporary French remedies. Beigbeder's novel is about a naughty playboy who cheats on his wife, is rejected by his mistress, and finds little solace in the (group) sex, (party) drugs, and techno music of his incredibly hip Parisian crowd. Quel dommage, baby. This barely fictionalized hero would be reason enough to toss the book with great vigour at the nearest Eurotrash electro DJ, except for one problem: Beigbeder can write. The novel's prose is a mix of the kind of aphorisms about love the French are known for, with a Beigbeder's novel is about a naughty playboy who cheats on his wife, is rejected by his mistress, and finds little solace in the (group) sex, (party) drugs, and techno music of his incredibly hip Parisian crowd.

(For the slang, you may need this: ) And I don't know how he does it, but the aphorisms are not only clever, they also ring true.In the end, Beigbeder reveals a bit of earnestness and vulnerability, just the thing to render a hopeless cad charming. His book, too. It’s natural to expect certain things from a book. However, expectations killed the cat (or was it curiosity?).I was preparing myself for an astonishing read, which would turn my world upside down. However, expectations killed the cat (or was it curiosity?).I was preparing myself for an astonishing read, which would turn my world upside down. I believed that after I was done with Love Lasts Three Years, I would look at love with different eyes. I though I would even hate the author for making me take off my pink glasses. But as it turns outLove Lasts Three Years‘s only good part is the title and maybe one or two quotes.Marc Marronier is a divorced literary critic in his thirties, who has a theory that a love only lasts three years.

His failed marriage is a perfect representation of this belief. Marc is depressed but for all the wrong reasons.

He cares more about the desire of his mistress Alice to stay with her husband than the fact that his wife Anne left him. To make matters worse, Alice’s husband is Marc’s cousin. Wait, actually no one cares about that. The storyline is boring. The whole book is boring.

Maybe if you are a 30-year-old male having an early mid-life crisis, you’ll like it.Well, I’m not.Until the first forty-something pages I even thought I was reading an autobiography and I’m still not sure if I wasn’t. Of course, that was probably the point. Why Beigbeder, why?The only thing that kept me from giving up on Love Lasts Three Years was my never-ending believe that you can find something good even in the worst book. And as I said before, I managed to find something exceptionally good – the title. The title is amazing and it serves its purpose right – it makes you buy and read this excuse of a novel. I’m sorry if I come off harsh but do you really think Love Lasts Three Years gives you a genuine answer to the question it brings up? No, no, it doesn’t.I can’t help but imagine how many people are being misled by the title every day.

They see this book and ask themselves: “Why does love only lasts three damn years? Why not one hundred?” Then the people who are single wonder: “Wait, is that why it didn’t work out with insert-random-name-here,” while the ones in a relationship think: “It’s been 2 years and 11 months. Should I just pack my bags and leave?”Do you know how many people started doubting their whole entire relationship because of this title? No matter how good it is, it is manipulative. Even the main character admits it himself! As of the characters, they weren’t well developed.Still, I have a favourite – Anne. She finds out her husband is cheating and does what? She leaves with grace!

Not once does Anne turn back, because she knows that she deserves more! I admire her strength and ability to move on.Can you guess who my least favourite character is? Yes, it is Marc Marronier. He is too vulgar, vile and dull for my taste. I cannot relate to him even a little.I don’t think I will ever pick up Love Lasts Three Years again. I didn’t like it at all.

I’m sorry if you love it or if it’s one of your favourite books, but for me it was just a waste of precious time. I have another book from Beigbeder in my home library, but I don’t think I will read it anytime soon.

The book talks about a man that is a pessimist about love, at first if you has gone through a sad romantic story you understand what he is saying, what he is afraid is also my afraid ' love becomes bored, becomes routines'.
